I have been unexpectedly charged VAT on my subscription payment.

Symptoms

  • I have been overcharged for my subscription.
  • The invoice I have received lists tax as part of my payment.
  • The tax number was set correctly before the bill date and I was not expecting to be charged tax.

Cause:

You are exempt from paying consumption tax but have been incorrectly charged on your latest invoice. You need the tax refunded and a new invoice generated.

You need to have an invoice updated to include your new tax number for accounting purposes.

You need to add a tax number to a subscription so you are not charged tax on future invoices.

Resolution:

It is not possible to refund tax on invoices or edit invoices that have already been generated.

To add a tax number to the Organization with your subscription attached so you are not charged tax on future invoices:

  1. Sign in at id.unity.com.
  2. Click ‘Organizations’ to the left side of the screen.
  3. Click the Organization name with your subscription attached.
  4. Click ‘Edit’ in the top right corner of the ‘Organization Details’ window.Edit_Org_1.png
  5. Scroll down and check the box next to ‘I am exempt from paying consumption tax’. VAT_2.png
  6. Enter your tax number.
  7. Click the green ‘Save’ button.

To add a tax number to Asset Store purchases:

  1. Sign in at id.unity.com.
  2. Click ‘Organizations’ to the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on your default Organization (this usually has the same title as your username and is the Organization automatically generated when you create your Unity ID).
  4. Click ‘Edit’ in the top right corner of the ‘Organization Details’ window.
  5. Scroll down and check the box next to ‘I am exempt from paying consumption tax’.
  6. Enter your tax number.
  7. Click the green ‘Save’ button.

If your tax number is approved, you will see a green dot and the message ‘Tax is approved’ underneath where you entered your tax number.

PLEASE NOTE: Taxes are applicable to customers based in the U.S. If you are exempt from paying the applicable taxes, we will need to verify your proof of exemption manually before any purchases are made. Please send your certification to salestax@unity3d.com. We will contact you once we have verified your proof of exemption.

On very rare occasions, the third-party system Unity uses to verify VAT numbers fails. This can result in VAT being added to an invoice incorrectly. If this happens, our system usually corrects itself. The incorrect invoice is credited back to the account with a ‘Credit Memo’ and a new invoice is generated. If you believe you have been affected by this, please do not hesitate to contact Customer Service so we can investigate further.

More Information

If you are certain your tax number is correct, but it is showing as ‘invalid’, contact Customer Service.
