Can I make a commercial game with Unity Free/Personal Edition?

Symptoms

  • I would like to know if I can sell a game that I made in Unity using the Personal Edition?
  • Can I make money from a game or app I made using the free version of Unity?

Cause

You are a developer using Unity Personal Edition.

You want to sell a game or app you have made and continue to use the Free/Personal Edition, without upgrading to Plus or Pro.

Resolution

You can absolutely sell commercial games made in the Personal Edition of Unity.

To do this, you must meet the requirements to use Unity Personal Edition. This is that you did not earn or receive more than $100,000 in revenue or funding in the most recent 12 month period.

More Information

If you are a 'independent/solo developer' - revenue earned is based on personal revenue made from using Unity, in the most recent 12 month period. E.G money earned from Unity Ads or games published.

If you wish to use Unity Personal Edition, whilst working for a company, the $100,000 cap is in relation to the entire company's overall earned revenue or funding for the most recent 12 month period.

Please see our Software Terms of Service for all information on our different license tiers.

    Hi,
I have similar situation as Jeremiah Edward Blondin, where my company doesn't do any game development and I want to do side project in Unity. Can I install Unity Free/Personal edition on PC at my workplace or I have to have Buisness License?

    Hello everyone.

    Thanks for your questions.

@Derpy Dog 123 -If you donate the money to charity, you will still be classed as a company which generates over the amount in relation to the revenue cap. You will need to make sure you're on the correct tier license.

@Krzysztof - If a company needs to maintain a project after it's been released it will still need a license if it was publisher with a Pro/Plus license. Same as an individual user.

I hope this clears things up. Please feel free to get back if you have any follow up questions :)

I feel a little uncertain with regards to the answer given to @Thanos Petsas; let's say hypothetically that I'm employed as a bus driver, and I earn US$101'000 by doing this job. I then download the free personal version of Unity and make a game (in my free time, after hours) that netts me US$1 in the first year of its release. Do I now need to upgrade to a Plus or Pro account, since I earned US$102'000, or do I stay on Free, as I only earned US$1 from my Unity related activities?

PS: just to be clear, in my hypothetical question above, the company I would be driving the bus for would have absolutely no relation, interest or share in the game making activities. Also, let's assume that the bus company makes much more than US$100'000, hypothetically.

Also, in my hypothetical question above, was I supposed to download a paid version from the beginning, as I was already earning more than US$100'000 when I started?

Further to my enquiry above, let's say that I drive a bus for a salary of US$5'001 per year, and I've been doing so for 20 years. That means I've raised funds of US$100'020 over the last 20 years (through bus driving).

Does that mean I MUST purchase a paid version of Unity in order to legally release a game?

    Hi Jan,

According to the scenario that you have provided, it is not necessary to purchase a paid version of Unity and you can use the free version of Unity to legally release a game as we are looking at revenue or funding in the last 12 months instead of years.

Adding on, if after you have release the game you make and the revenue you earned is only US$1 after 12 months, then you can continue to use the free version of Unity.

For more information, you can refer to https://store.unity.com/ under FAQ "What Unity plan am I eligible to use?".

Let me know if you have further questions.

Can I develop a 3D visualization application using Unity and sell it to my customers? My customers, after purchasing my application created with Unity, should they accept the Unity license and pay Unity if they use it for commercial purposes?

@Unity AJ_KR I'm currently an intern at an environmental non profit and one of our goals at the internship is to complete an individual project at the end. For mine I want to make an AR app with Unity however I'm not sure if I could use unity personal. I first read that it's only the app that cannot make more than 100,000 dollars, which I wouldn't have to worry about but then I read that the company you're with cannot have an annual revenue of more than 100,000 dollars a fiscal year. Though it will not function as an aid to the nonprofit, it is associated with them. However, while they have a budget over 100,000, they do not produce any revenue. May I still use Unity personal or do I need to switch to plus. Thank you!

Hi @unity, what if it is used in making a patented tech? Do you get a part of that patent?

    Hello Vladimir.

    Thanks for reaching out.

In regards to your query. This all depends on what you plan on selling to your customers. If your customers do not need to use Unity to use the products you sell them, then they do not need a Unity License.

If you would like to find out specifically the terms in which you need a license for your current situation. Please feel to reach out to support@unity3d.com

    Hello wrathofkhan

Thanks for reaching out to us.

In regards to your query, even if the entity is non-profit, the tier license need to match the license with the income of the entity.

    Hi Mon Day.

Thanks for reaching out to us.

    In regards to your query

If you create an App with Unity, that is completely yours. Unity do not take any ownership of content created in the patent or in royalty's.

    Hi everyone!

Could anyone help me clarify the last part of this sentence, please: "Total Finances are your gross revenues and/or funding (no matter what the source)" ?

Does it mean that if I run a crowdfunding campaign to be able to produce a game, the money collected would count for the Financial Thresholds?

    Thank you in advance!

    Hey there.

I'm new to this software and I'll be learning how to use it by my own. I don't have any project right now but I would like to publish some games soon... or later.

Keeping that in mind, which option should I choose when activating my personal license? I'm not working for any company right now and I'm not producing 100k+ by myself, but I'm curious how do you ensure that? Is it okay if I choose that option even if I don't get to publish anything at all?

@Juan, For your question asked, the money that you have collected will not be count for the Financial Thresholds as you did not use Unity yet at the point of time.

It is only when you create a game/product using Unity, then this the money/revenue earned will be count for the Financial Thresholds.

@Gustavo, you can use the personal version of Unity for now as a start since you are not earning anything yet but if you do publish your game and start earning revenue from it and hit the financial thresholds of more than $100K, then you will need to upgrade to a Plus/Pro.

There are members in the team who are in-charge of ensuring that users are using the right Unity plan.

@Adarsh, Anyone can publish their game made even though you are not earning anything from it.

We do have a student plan now cater to students and you can go to https://store.unity.com/academic/unity-student to find out more.

@i don't know, For your case, you will just need to upgrade to Pro when the game you publish start to generate revenue for more than $200K

    What about my case.
I would like to create a game personally in my own time, not related to my company. Thing is my company uses Unity developing apps, but I do not use that software.

So Can I use Personal edition to make commercial games?

    Hello,

I'm currently studying a Masters degree and will be using unity for my final dissertation project. If I use the student license am I able to release the final product under the same conditions as the personal license?

Is there a difference between the student and personal license other than the (awesome) github academic backpack bundle?

    Many thanks,

    Hola,
